Five Trischel Tips for Controlling Nerves

Everyone feels nervous before giving a presentation in public, and some degree of nerves is necessary to add emotion and energy to the speech. However the following tips might make it a little easier for you to control your nerves.
  1. Become familiar with the venue and the equipment. If you know the layout and the position of the equipment you are not walking into a completely strange place. Lack of familiarity increases nervous tension.
  2. Practice, practice and then practice some more. Prepare your topic, practise your speech – don’t try to be word perfect. Talk to dot points. Accept every opportunity to practice your skill. The adage that ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ is mainly true. By seeking out speaking opportunities you will become more familiar with public speaking, and with familiarity comes a sense of confidence.
  3. Practise Visualisation techniques – see yourself giving your speech, receiving the applause. See yourself succeeding. Do this over and over – you will soon feel so comfortable with the process that when you get up to speak it will be almost like déjà vu.
  4. Relaxation - Some deep breathing just before you get up to speak will spread oxygen through out the body and relax those nerves – so that when you are ready to speak you can commence with power and force.
  5. Be natural and smile… smile at the audience and the audience will smile at you. They want you to succeed.
