Meet Mark Hunter

Mark Hunter is a unique character who has overcome many challenges in his life.

At the age of 22 an accident put him permanently in a wheelchair, since when he has been 'a navel gazer.'

Mark qualified as a teacher, but after his accident he had difficulty in getting back into teaching ... he says "no one was teaching from a wheelchair and there was a belief in the system that it couldn't be done."

Not only could it be done, but Mark did it superbly, but he had to overcome much opposition before he was allowed to prove it.  His love of teaching plus his attitude has made it possible for him to return to the profession; and at present he is the head of Urndurba State School at Murrumba Downs.

His other passion is public speaking and being an active member of Toastmasters International in District 69 (Queensland, Northern Territories, Northern New South Wales plus Papua New Guinea) - he took part in their annual speech contests.

I have known Mark since I came to Brisbane in 1997 and ever since I have known him he has been passionate about his goal of winning the coveted trophy of World Champion of Public Speaking.

In 2007 he was placed third in the world, and has reached the finals on at least three other occasions 

But this year was Mark's year - and finally, in America and to general acclaim, he was announced as the 2009 World Champion.  The folks from Australia went bananas!!
